Import contacts from a CSV file
Upload a spreadsheet of contacts, map its columns to Survtapp fields, add them to a list, and see exactly what was created, updated or skipped.
Importing is a four-step wizard at Contacts, then Import Contacts. You upload a file, confirm which column is which, choose where the contacts should land, and get a summary.
Preparing the file
Click Download Template on the upload step to get a correctly-shaped file to fill in. Its header row is: email, firstName, lastName, phone, company.
- The file must be CSV, with one header row and one contact per row.
- Email is what identifies a contact, so a row without one cannot be imported.
- Wrap any value containing a comma in double quotes.
- Your own column names do not have to match ours — you map them in the next step.
Uploading and mapping
Choose your file. Survtapp reads the header row and guesses the mapping for you, recognising common spellings such as e-mail, first name, given name, surname, mobile, tel, organization and business. Anything it cannot place is left for you to set, and any column you do not want is set to Skip.
A preview of the first five rows is shown under the mapping, so you can confirm the columns line up before committing.
Choosing where they go
- Add to list — put every imported contact into one of your existing contact lists. Leave it as no list to import them without one.
- Update existing contacts if email matches — off by default. Leave it off and a contact you already hold is skipped; turn it on and their details are refreshed from the file.
The result
When the import finishes you get three counts — Created, Updated and Skipped — plus a list of any rows that failed, each with the email and the reason. Fix those rows in your spreadsheet and import just those again; the ones that already landed are not duplicated.
After importing
Imported contacts behave like any other. If you have connected SendGrid, Mailchimp, GoHighLevel, HubSpot or Constant Contact, they take part in your usual sync — see Integrations. Contacts also carry an email status, and anyone marked Unsubscribed, Bounced or Complained is skipped by triggers and campaigns regardless of how they arrived.
Contacts can be exported back out to CSV at any time from the Contacts page.
