How does offline collection actually work?
The mobile app downloads the complete survey — questions, logic, validation — when it syncs, so opening a form in the field needs no network at all. Each completed response is written to the device immediately with its capture time and held in a visible queue.
When connectivity returns, the queue flushes in order. Duplicate protection means a sync interrupted halfway never creates double entries, and you get a sync confirmation rather than a silent failure.
What does the enumerator see while offline?
Exactly what they see online: the same form, the same validation, the same flow. The only difference is a queue counter showing how many responses are waiting to sync. The device does not warn the respondent, refuse entries, or change behaviour — offline is a normal operating state, not an error.
Where do offline surveys earn their keep?
Field research in rural areas, in-home interviews, hospital and factory floors where radios are restricted, basements and parkades, trade-show halls with overloaded Wi-Fi, and fleets of kiosk tablets that must keep working through an outage. If your work happens where the bars disappear, collection should not depend on them.
